Christian's Portfolio
Hello, and welcome to my portfolio!

My name is Christian Jensen, and I live in England with my parents from Denmark. I'm excited to present a collection of my work that I have completed in Harlow College Game Design Level 2. I have passed the following GCSE courses: GCSE Computer Science Grade 5, Maths Grade 5 and English Grade 4. In addition, I have passed BTEC Level 1 with grade merit merit. I have attended a two-week summer course in animation at the University of Plymouth/Brunel. In Game Design Level 2, I have coded in GDevelop and Minecraft and had drawing classes. For enrichment, I have done photography, drawing and drama. I have dedicated time and effort to develop a strong portfolio that showcases my experiences and experimentations at Harlow College. I invite you to explore the various sections of this portfolio and learn more about my passion for filmmaking and game design. I'm currently working on a video game called Dragon Quest.

Thank you for taking the time to review and share my work with you.

I look forward to receiving feedback/opportunities from my work that may arise from this portfolio. I plan to complete a filmmaking course after Gaming Level 3.
Dragon Quest
This is the game cover for Dragon Quest on PS4. The cover will include the age-rating to make sure it is sold in an age appropriate way for children. It will have an image of the main character and locations at the front with the title of the game at the top.
Above is a mind map for the game.
This image shows the story and how the story is split up in parts. It also shows the Zelda video game which I used as inspiration for Dragon Quest.
I was inspired to make Dragon Quest by playing Zelda at home on the Nintendo Switch. I particularly enjoyed the medieval fantasy world with trees, a castle, and a volcano. The antagonist, Demon King Ganondorf, inspired me because when I defeated him as the final boss in Zelda, I liked his red hair which made me think of fire and lava.
Characters
This image shows Prince Conrad, the protagonist of Dragon Quest, holding his sword. I decided for him to be modelled on a medieval knight so that the audience would realise he is brave, and his armour is strong to protect him from fire and lava. I was inspired by Zelda in knight armour because the medieval times were famous for their knights and I liked how he looked in the game.
This image shows Lava the Demon, the main antagonist of Dragon Quest. He also wears a fiery crown. I chose to make him a fire demon because I think the element of fire is one of the most dangerous elements. I was inspired by the game of Zelda, and Te-Ka in Moana.
This image shows a rock monster and a goo lava monster, who are the servants and henchmen of Lava. They try to harm Prince Conrad and put obstacles in his way. The rock monster was also inspired by Zelda, where there are flowers that turn into rocks when they are touched. The goo lava monster was inspired by Pac-Man with the red ghost who are always chasing the hero.
This image shows a flying demon from Dragon Quest. They are also servants of Lava’s and try to attack Prince Conrad in the volcano lair when he shines light on them. I was inspired by the bats from Super Mario Brothers, but I wanted to make them more fiery to fit in with the volcano theme.
This image shows Burn the Dragon. The image shows Burn with red eyes, which means that he is being hypnotised by Lava the Demon. The image shows the dragon breathing out fire. Burn the Dragon is one of the bosses that Prince Conrad has to defeat to get to Lava. I was inspired by films, such as How To Train Your Dragon and Reign of Fire, where dragons typically are the villains. The hypnotic element of the storyline was inspired by the film Hotel Transylvania 3.
Characters in Skin Editor
This image shows Prince Conrad in knight armour in Minecraft Skin Editor.
This image shows the King, Prince Conrad’s father, who sends him off on the quest to save the kingdom.
This image shows a lava demon in Skin Editor. It is different to my original drawings because I was limited to make cubed shapes in the Skin Editor. I would prefer to use something similar to my original drawings to show the full details.
This image shows a rock demon in Skin Editor. He is all grey. This is different to my original drawings because I could only use squares. I prefer my original drawing because I think it looks more like a rock.
The game's main characters are Prince Conrad, the hero, and Lava the Demon, the main villain. The hero is dressed as a knight to fight off evil in the medieval fantasy world. There are monsters in the medieval world in the volcano lair with goo monsters and flying demons. I took drawing classes in enrichment to help me with my drawings. I also took drawing classes in Udemy. I drew an animation of a person walking to see how animation works.
Drawings of characters in colours
This image shows Prince Conrad wearing a knight armour with the visor down and wearing a red cape. I chose a red cape because it is my favourite colour and it has historically been associated with sacrifice, danger, and courage.
This image shows Lava the Demon wearing a fiery crown. This image shows Lava in colours that indicate that he comes from a volcano.
Level Designs
Level Designs in GDevelop
This image above show an example of a level designed in GDevelop.
The two pictures above shows a game level in 2D and associated code. The lava would mean death for the player. The ground and the rocks will have collision detection for the player. The moving platforms will also have collision detection. The skeleton walks a predetermined route and if he encounters the hero, the hero will die.
Level Designs in Minecraft
This is the volcano from Dragon Quest that I created in Minecraft.
This image shows an example of the front of the castle in Minecraft. This image shows the opening of the game with a cutscene which begins with the knight's journey to the volcano.
This image shows the back of the castle in Minecraft.
Level Designs in Adobe Fresco
This image is an example of moving platforms in green. There is one moving up and down and two moving left and right. The moving platforms are there to transport the player safely without falling to death.
This image shows an example of the final boss level. This final boss level will have checkpoints if the player dies during the fight. If he dies, he will go back to the start of the fight.
This image shows an example of a level for a detour with a lever to open a door. Sometimes, doors will open up loot or progress in the story.
This image shows an example of an extra challenge in the level. The player has to jump into the chasm, and sometimes there will be loot or an extra level. The level counter will change to a negative number to show that this is an extra challenge which is not part of the normal game progression.
This image shows the player reaching the checkpoint and the flag is down.
This is a checkpoint flag. This image shows the flag going up after the player reached the checkpoint. The flag is a checkpoint for when the player dies, he will go back to the checkpoint. This is inspired by Super Mario Bros.
Having tried to design a level in 2D (GDevelop) and 3D (Minecraft), I think the game is best suited for 2D.
Timeline of video games
This image shows the timeline of video games made in Canva. I had to research the history of video games to show the difference and similarities between 2D and 3D games and their popularity.
This image shows the sources I used in Wikipedia to create the timeline.
I have created a timeline of 2D and 3D video games. The timeline shows the video game's popularity, genre, publisher, country of origin and year of release. The video game, Exterminator did not have a Wikipedia page, so I found other sources using Google. I do not regard Wikipedia as a reliable source of information, so I double-checked the information using IMdB or a general Google search.
Drawings
Walking Cycle 1
The four images above show an animation of a character walking forward made in Fresco. I used the character Diane Foxington from Dreamworks' Bad Guys as inspiration.
Drawing of teamwork
The picture above shows an exercise in Harlow College Game Design Level 2. A student drew the apple with a face and then I had to recreate the drawing. I like this picture because it shows a happy smiley face and I think I did a good job of recreating the original image.
This image shows a drawing a monster goo. This drawing was originally created by myself and I had to teach two other students how to draw it. I liked teaching other people how to draw because I like helping others.
The image above is another example of a drawing I had to recreate from another student's drawing. It shows the character Knack from the game Knack with his spiky hairs and ear-rings.
Walking Cycle 2
This is an animation of person walking with arms and legs swinging in the air. I drew this in Adobe Fresco.
Drawings of monsters
The three images above shows drawings of monsters with 8 separate body parts. The one that looks like a bat with poison fangs is my favourite which I decided to include my game, in Dragon Quest.
Colour Palettes
Lava level colour palette
The colour palette shows the colours of the lava level including Lava the Demon. The grey shows the rock monsters and the rocks on the ground. The red, orange and yellow shows the molten lava and the goo monsters and the demons. The big boss, Lava the Demon, is in orange and yellow because he wears a fiery crown and has got yellow eyes. There is lava flowing all over his body.
Prince Conrad colour palette
The colour palette for the knight. The grey is for the knight's armour and his shield. The grey is also used for the sword blade. The red is for the feather on the top of his helmet and his cape. The beige is for the skin colour, and the black is for the helmet visor. The brown is for the hair colour. The black is for the sword scabbard.
Game world colour palette
The colour palette for the medieval world. The blue is for the sky. The green is for the grass on the ground and the leaves on the trees. The yellow is for the sun. The brown is for the tree stumps and ground. The black is for the corrupted rocks.
Videos
Above is a video recording of gameplay in Crash Bandicoot. The student group were asked to add sounds. We made sounds for waves in the water, smashing boxes and wind.
Minecraft Coding Experience
The Minecraft activity shows the robot moving forward in a straight line and detecting gold and diamonds. If the robot sees a diamond or a gold piece, the robot will say, "We're rich!"
The Minecraft code shows the subroutine for arrows shot. The routine counts the number of arrows.
Minecraft code for concatenation of two words.
Minecraft code for asking for someone's age and determining whether it is a grandpa, a baby or coincidence.
Deconstruction of Games
We managed to deconstruct three games. I deconstructed Zelda and determined age-rating, genre, story, characters and abilities. Zelda has inspired me to come up with Dragon Quest because of the castle and the medieval fantasy world.
