20 Interesting Facts About Baseball - A Typography Magazine

The Creative Process

1. Concept Searching: I wanted to try something new (again), a concept unfamiliar to me, something I did not know much about. Like my previous design concept 'Graffiti,' I chose Baseball this time. I thought that it would be a good concept to use since there are a lot of high quality graphics I could find online. I also wanted to try customizing a script font to experiment on how I can make it balanced with the graphics.

2. Finding Inspiration: The initial idea was to create the typical Baseball style where they used slab fonts with a double stroke; that's the easy way in. But, if I wanted to get better at typography, I needed to make a twist. So, I tried mixing up script font, retro colors, streetwear-style graphics, and poster/magazine layouting.

3. Finding the Typeface (there's no right one): Old ones used a common slab for this concept. The script display font is called Haglos Regular, similar to the Dodgers. I wanted to experiment on it by using the script's curves to balance with the graphics. This typeface is also not that clean, but it's good for the concept. For the second typeface, I wanted to pair it up with a sans. No Helvetica or Neue Haas Grotesk this time; I used the Alte Haas Grotesk typeface. It looked printed, which is somehow related to the history of Baseball being in newspapers.

4. Cleaning Anchor Points: As I said, the script I used is not clean. I had to clean its edges by deleting anchor points. Not only anchor points, but also the body's curving is somehow off. I did not have that much time to clean all of it, but most of it I did.

5. Graphics: I compiled graphics related to every fact found in each page. Although some of it are not connected, I just looked for a graphic that I could use as base for the layout. The effects I did for the graphics are edited in Photoshop: camera raw, filter gallery, levels, threshold, etc.

6. Cleaning Out: I had to adjust the kerning, tracking, leading, and spacing of every text. I tried to position every letter and every edge on the page that it does not bother the eyes. I wanted to create a smooth flow of visual attention. Every sizing, spacing, and positioning needed to make sense.
