Luno Collection - Thesis
I had a strong interest in materials and the relationship between form and structure. This became the main focus of my final year design work.
Designing an object depends on the technical possibilities of how the material can be shaped. It is called the language of the material. In my research I tried to anticipate and understand this language.
I used wood as the base material of my project work because of its natural qualities and because it has been used in furniture for thousands of years across many cultures. Designing wooden products requires many factors to take into account, such as its hardness, strength, resistance to moisture, grain direction, natural pattern, and careful craftsmanship.
The experimentation with cutting wood brought me to a project where the material was pushed to its limiting terms of creating organic shapes with a new, cost effective way of shaping without using moulds.
The parts were cut partly by machines, and partly by hand to achieve pre-planned curvature and connections.

The Luno collection (EM-1 Lounge chair, EM-2 Chaise Lounge chair, EM-3 Coat hanger) represents the application of this new bending technique.
