Aidan Canty - Photo Diary

Photo Diary: Jan 9-15, 2024
By: Aidan Canty

Synopsis
This assignment was very eye opening, given that it allowed me to realize how often I actually take photos every day without even knowing. My camera roll is almost always out of storage, given that I tend to take photos of everything that I find interesting, whether it be a picture of something meaningful or not. For this assignment, I really wanted to focus on both composition elements, and colour schemes, because they tend to work hand in hand with one another when organizing the perfect shot. As you will see in my descriptions for each photo, common composition elements I shot were lines, and symmetry. These two elements seem to be the most commonly found, because they are used in so many different ways (for architecture, advertisements, etc). One of the main challenges I faced when completing this assignment was choosing which photos to use, and which not to use. As previously mentioned, I take a lot of photos, therefore I had to limit them when placing the chosen seven in my diary. I really enjoyed naming my photos, because it allowed me to tell a story through simple shots that I took when I saw something interesting. I also really enjoyed how I was able to utilize photos from different spaces in Ottawa, and allow them to complement each other in this diary. For example, I got the chance to visit Parliament, China Town, Campus, The Byward Market, and more. The range of locations I was able to visit allowed me to further explore this city. Under each photograph, I have included specific elements that I captured while on this journey!

Image #1, January 9th: "The Sun and The Moon"

Synopsis
This is a photo that I took of a light on one of the walls in building B. I used Rule of Thirds for this photo, because it aimed focus at the light, drawing the viewers eyes to a specific spot in the image. I named this image "The Sun and The Moon", because the brightness and contrast of the image makes the light look like it could be either of the two. This image is up for interpretation.
Image #2, January 10th: "Claw Machine"

Synopsis
This photo was taken at a place called "Axia Station" downtown Ottawa. Every month, the owners change out the stuffed animals in the claw machines, and replace them with new ones. Usually, there are variants of colours when it comes to the animals in the same machine, which is something I noticed in this particular one. There seems to be an analogous colour scheme going on here, with the pink and the purple stuffed animals, which was very interesting! When it comes to compositional elements, horizontal lines were used to create a pleasing display for the customers.

Image #3, January 11th: "The Watch Cat"

Synopsis
This photo was taken near my apartment, and I thought it was very cute. I feel as though this image demonstrates a good example of frame, and depth, given that the cat is posing behind a window. I felt that this image was simple, but well orchestrated, given that the cat and the window are placed directly in the middle of the frame. It almost seems pre planned which was awesome.

Image #4, January 12th: "Twinkies"

Synopsis
First of all, I love Twinkies (they are delicious). What inspired me to choose this photo to add to the diary was the in class work we did last semester when discussing colour schemes. For one of the activities, students had to find examples of different colour schemes using photos from the internet. For Split Complimentary, a lot of brands were shown to have used this specific colour scheme. The packages colours are two shades of blue and an orange - red. I think this colour scheme choice is pretty, and inviting for consumers. Additionally, the vending machine uses horizontal lines to display their products in a tidy fashion.

Image #5, January 13th: "China Town"

Synopsis
This image was taken in China Town, Ottawa. There is plenty of beautiful wall art here, which is why I chose to take a few photos in this area. The first element I noticed about this painting was the analogous colour scheme of the dragon. When it comes to compositional elements, there is symmetry when looking at the size and shape of the bricks.
Image #6, January 14th: "Parliament"

Synopsis
The architecture of this building reveals symmetry as a main compositional element. This building was next to parliament, however I believe it was a hotel. If you were to split this hotel in half, and hold up a mirror to one side, this is the image that would reveal itself. even the snow on the rooftop is somewhat symmetrical!

Image #7, January 15th: "Lead The Way"

Synopsis
This image reveals leading lines, given that the yellow line is getting smaller as it reaches the distance. Given the angle of this image, I was able to capture a distant feeling.
