Photo Diary- Jan 09-15, 2024

Photo Diary: Jan 09-15, 2024
"Garden Clean-up- Jan 09, 2024" - Mason Saunders (2024)
Purpose of Portfolio:
Our first assignment for Creative II, we are asked to take a picture everyday for the first week back to school and create a photo diary. Our images should highlight techniques previously learned from our first semester and images that we find interesting. Here are images I captured everyday (from Jan 09-15, 2024) that fascinated me and highlighted my first week getting back to the college lifestyle.

Tuesday:
"Down the Hall- Jan 09, 2024" - Mason Saunders (2024)
While on a mission to capture images for a class assignment, I thought this hall would be a great capture. This image captures multiple techniques, one being leading lines. Your eye is drawn to the floor markings heading towards the end of the hallway. Another technique is balance, if you notice on each side of the floor markings you see hand rails and pillars that are equally placed opposed each other, which creates a nice balance in the hallway.
Wednesday:
"Leave the door light on- Jan 10, 2024"- Mason Saunders (2024)
On a walk to my car from an evening class, I captured this image of the side of the college building. The dark sky and just seeing the light over the door to me seemed like an interesting picture. The building brick is an example of pattern that I thought would be an interesting add-in to this diary.
Thursday:
"Exit: This Way- Jan 11, 2024"- Mason Saunders (2024)
Walking through my apartment building, I looked down this hallway and wanted to capture it as a "horror movie scene". Along with the image giving an 'eerie' vibe, it also creates a leading line with ones eye being drawn to going directly down the hall.
Friday:
"Masterpiece in Progress- Jan 12, 2024"- Mason Saunders (2024)
Friday was my first class back in studio for this semester. Studio time is always the best time to capture images, especially 'behind the scenes' shoots, so I wanted to capture my first (of hopefully many) behind the scenes images. I'd like to think this image is an example of rule of thirds, because the positioning of the cart at the front right and everything else is the background.
Saturday:
"Snow-day Saturday- Jan 13, 2024"- Mason Saunders (2024)
My first weekend back in Ottawa, I must've brought back the Labrador snow. The snowfall was a perfect time to capture some seasonal images and thought it was a good inclusion to this project. This image shows leading lines, as the snow paved roads create a leading line which carries your eye from the parking lot to the underground parking entrance on the left. This image also contains pattern, the layout of the apartment building on the right.
Sunday:
"Desk of a Photography Student- Jan 14, 2024"- Mason Saunders (2024)
Sundays are school work days. To prove I was a productive student, I wanted to capture the look of my desk with my camera and books. The position of the camera and books created a rule of thirds image. If you notice, my books are either school related (the top one) or photography related which is basically all I consume in my current life, living my best life.
Monday:
"Light Above the Sign- Jan 15, 2024)- Mason Saunders (2024)
For my final photo diary submission, I wanted to capture an image, and capture the image with a technique I haven't used like with my previous pictures. When I captured this image of the sign, I wanted to include the technique of negative space. Negative space is resembled in this picture because when you look to the right of the wall, there is nothing displayed. Rule of thirds could also be used, but for the purpose of this capture I wanted to show a different technique.
Final Thoughts of this Portfolio:
Overall, this photo diary was a fun little assignment to get back into the swing of things after a much needed break. This assignment allowed me to gain a refresher on techniques and strategies that I definitely forgot about while I was away. The biggest struggle of this exercise for me was trying to determine techniques being shown in my captures, because most (if not all) of my images I never fully planned strategies, I mainly took the images I did because I thought the scene looked interesting and I could edit them in appealing ways. Another struggle, was reminding myself to take pictures for this project, as life gets busy, it is easy to forget so the reminders were challenging.

I am really pleased with this first portfolio of 2024, and I look forward to evolving my skills and content as this semester and year continues.
The Best is yet to Come.
