Lonely
The Green Mallard felt a pang of sadness as he glided across the calm water, his yellow beak dipping in and out of the surface. He saw his own reflection, but no sign of his mate. He wondered where she could be, and if she was safe. He remembered the happy days they had spent together, building their nest, raising their ducklings, and flying to warmer lands. He hoped she would return soon, and fill his life with joy again. He quacked softly, hoping she would hear him and answer. But the only sound he heard was his own echo, fading away in the distance.​​​​​​​
