"Country of Light" is a prestigious competition among media artists to create 3D mapping, held on the main square of the northern capital, on the headquarters building of the Guards Corps. This year theme of the festival was the story of "Small Motherland". And I was lucky to be among the finalists.

__ABOUT
The Murmansk region is located in the north-west of Russia and is one of the northernmost regions of the country. It has a rich nature due to its position in the Arctic zone of Russia.
Today I have a chance to talk about a place that is especially dear to my heart, the small village of Nikel, Pechenga district, Murmansk region, where I was born and raised. Here I was lucky enough to see the beauty of the magnificent northern nature and learn first-hand about the rich resources of my native land.
My home village of Nikel is located 195 kilometers from Murmansk, near the border with Norway. I will tell you about this unique place through the prism of my perception of how industry and natural resources coexist.

__PROLOGUE
Before taking the viewer on a journey through my small homeland, I propose to introduce him to the “canvas” for 3D mapping, using abstract visual effects. With the play of shadows and light, I emphasized and revealed the significant elements of the architectural facade, thereby preparing the viewer’s consciousness for viewing the upcoming story.

__THE HEART OF THE VILLAGE
My small homeland, the village of Nikel, is located about 230 kilometers from Murmansk, on the border with Norway. It was founded in the 30s of the 20th century during the period when the territory of Pechenga was part of Finland (1920-1944). In the 20th century, the industrial development of the village began, associated with the extraction of rich natural resources and the construction of an ore processing plant - it became the beating heart that gave the village new life.
But today the industrial life of the village is in the past... As part of the implementation of measures to improve the environmental situation, the work of the smelting shop was stopped in 2020.
My small homeland, the village of Nikel, is located about 230 kilometers from Murmansk, on the border with Norway. __RICHES HIDDEN FROM EYES
As a result of geological exploration work, it was concluded that the Kaula deposit is of industrial interest in terms of size and nickel content in the ore. It began to be considered as the largest in the area, and the main volume of surface drilling and mine construction was concentrated here. Mining of the most promising areas of ore bodies goes deeper and deeper underground (up to 200 meters).
As a result of geological exploration work, it was concluded that the Kaula deposit is of industrial interest in terms of size and nickel content in the ore. It began to be considered as the largest in the area, and the main volume of surface drilling and mine construction was concentrated here. Mining of the most promising areas of ore bodies goes deeper and deeper underground (up to 200 meters).
__NATURE OF THE NORTH
But for me, Nickel is not limited to the activities of the plant, where I also managed to work. I am a connoisseur of the special northern nature of my small homeland, an explorer of the most beautiful lakes, dozens of which are located in the vicinity of Nikel, unique waterfalls, rapids rivers where our northern salmon are caught, stunning vegetation of the hills, tundra and forest-tundra with its berry and mushroom treasures.
My favorite north is the unique feeling of light on a polar day when the sun just touching the horizon begins a new day. When there is no feeling of night and fatigue, when you are ready to be on the move around the clock, just like the sun. It conveys its warmth to a wonderful autumn, colorful, bright, really golden, this is a unique riot of colors before a long dark clearing at night. The polar night is the queen of our northern winter. By covering everything with a dark blanket, it creates a special atmosphere and makes it possible to see the stunning winter starry sky in which the northern lights blaze and shimmer.
