Holbrook

Darius Holbrook was one of the earlier investors in Cairo, an old city at the southernmost tip of Illinois State, flanked by the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. He founded the Cairo City and Canal Company, which allowed him to construct the first levee surrounding the city; aiding to prevent flooding from the rivers. Several failed commissions to bring more boat and rail commerce into the area dissolved the Company in 1840. Constructing the levee without raising the land elevation in Cairo failed to deter the first of many serious floods in the area.
