Typography Project 1: Cochin Typeface Posters
This triptych provides background on the Cochin typeface with a Harry Potter-inspired theme since the font's most recognizable use is for the original Bloomsbury publishing Harry Potter book covers. The color palette of red and yellow references the classic Griffyndor colors. The large background letters are gilded, beveled and embossed to mimic the graphic style of the movie posters, with a deathly hallows symbol on the central poster made out of letters from the typeface to reference the franchise. The first and third poster also includes famous spells cast in the books and movies to provide a textural element. Moreover, the third poster includes a quote that references one of the most famous lines in the series.
Below are some weekly progress iterations of type experimentation and layout design from a moodboard to hand-drawn thumbnails to individual letter studies and color palette explorations. The posters themselves went through multiple critiques and compositional changes, with a few revisions shown here.
Here is what the posters look like as mock-ups, which was useful to see how the design choices work in a real space.
