Daruma Doll Pattern and Poster Design

Pattern design and poster design for a custom Daruma doll from a souvenir shop in Kagawa, Japan.

YOHAKu26 is a unique souvenir shop located on the approach to Konpira Shrine. The shop was opened as a concept shop by the fourth generation of a long-established souvenir shop, rethinking conventional souvenirs from a new perspective. Konpira Shrine is dedicated to the god of the Sea, to whom fishermen from all over the country pay homage, and YOHAKu26 has planned this Daruma for people other than fishermen in the hope that they will enjoy their lives and not be overwhelmed by the rough and tumble of society.

I designed the typography for the Daruma's pattern using the four hiragana characters for 'Konpira', inspired by traditional wave patterns. The wave motif, which represents the god of the sea, was geometrically morphed and merged with the curves of the Konpira characters to create a unique mark.

For the posters for the shop display, I created playful illustrations that depict the fun lifestyle these Daruma dolls bring, inviting people to imagine everyday scenes with them.
