This cover illustration was created for the summer issue of Scholastic News Magazine. They wanted a kids in space scene combined with being at the beach. To see how we got to the finished art. take a look at the sketches below and then the final art used.
Sketch #1, Rocket blasting off from the beach.
Sketch #2 Kids playing on a moon beach. I really like this one especially the kids wearing the swimsuits over their spacesuits.
Sketch #1 was chosen by the art director. Then they requsted we add a second kid in the scene. Perfect opportunity to use a jet pack!
And then we have the final art. The art director asked me to do the headline "Blast Off!" type as well, which I was more than happy to add.
