Pencil portrait of G A Escher

This piece took a LONG amount of time to complete. To put it politely. But I love it and would never part with it. All the tiny marks at the bottom of the drawing are measurements. With a face, I find that it is important to measure EVERYTHING, one misplaced mark or line will throw off the measurements for the whole piece so it’s best to make sure every mark is perfect every time.

It is a copy of M C Escher’s drawing of his dad. I love M C Escher’s work and find it very inspiring on many levels. It sings of time, hard work, dedication and also a wonderful imagination.

For me, Escher’s work embodies the idea that once you have honed a realistic, technical style this gives you a lot of freedom as it enables you to create fantastical, surreal worlds.
