Ostia Antica was Rome's main commerce port. It sat at the mouth of the Tiber River. Now Ostia Antica sits at the edge of a dried salt pan because the water way to the city changed course, and caused the port to silt-up. This forced the local commercial enterprises to abandon the port area and move closer to city of Rome, to reestablish on a new area of the Tiber River. Eventually, Ostia Antica was abandoned. Today the city is kept in a state of arrested decay.
Many of the original mosaic tiles still remain.
