Editorial illustrations for the magazine Spaning

A selection of editorial illustrations. Made for the magazine Spaning, a citizen newspaper for seniors living in Malmö, Sweden. I wanted the iIllustrations to have a handmade, human touch, so that they would feel close and warm, even when the issue of the article was more somber.
By the bed. Illustration for the magazine Spaning, #2, 2022. The subject of the article was about how to accommodate the different needs and wants that occur when advanced care is made within the own home. The accompanying quote: "Something that usually occurs is that a couple or one partner does not want a hospital bed to be installed, so that the home does not look like a hospital."
Zoom call. Illustration for the magazine Spaning, #3, 2021. An article about how the Pandemic impacted seniors loneliness.
The accompanying quote: "The arenas that have been open for social exchange have become incredibly important, it is a need that you can almost touch."
Going uphill. Illustration for the magazine Spaning, #3, 2021. An article about how the Pandemic impacted seniors loneliness.
The accompanying quote: "We have now come a long way out of the pandemic, but many have a tough uphill climb ahead of them when it comes to their social life."
Communicating with signs. Spaning, #3, 2020. An article about language barriers in the elderly care.
The accompanying quote: "We should be able to make better use of the diversity that exists within elderly care in Malmö."
Sign language. Spaning, #3, 2020. An article about language barriers in the elderly care.
The accompanying quote: "When nothing else worked, we used sign language."
Old photographs. Spaning, #3, 2018. An article about the psychology of aging.
The accompanying quote: "I don't think you think too much about your age as long as you are healthy."
Contemplating aging. Spaning, #3, 2018. An article about the psychology of aging.
The accompanying quote: "You think a lot about the choices you've made in life and everything you've been through."
In the shower. Illustration for the magazine Spaning, "2, 2022. An article about dilemmas that can occur when advanced care is made within the home. The quotation translates to: "There are always women who find it uncomfortable with male healthcare staff."
The first sketch of the illustration, to see if it would be a good choice for the article.
The quotation translates to: "Something that usually occurs is that a couple or one partner does not want a hospital bed to be installed, so that the home does not look like a hospital."
I decided to place a companion next to the person on the bed, holding their back. A person alone would be too sad and the subject matter is serious but should be portrayed in a hopeful way.
