For my graphic stylization module, I designed a Art Deco stylized book cover for ‘The Great Gatsby’ by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The cover features Gatsby and Daisy at a party in the 1920s. Despite the simple illustration style, you can clearly see how Gatsby and Daisy are lost in each other’s eyes—an indication of their deep love—so much so that the other guests around them melt into the background.
The book mentions how Gatsby spends many nights staring at the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock, across the bay from his mansion, hoping to one day rekindle their lost romance. Thus, I gave Daisy a green earring as a symbol of Gatsby’s love. In the background, I added a silhouette of the city skyline with a few spotlights, and used warm colours like red, orange and yellow to portray the exciting city life in the Roaring Twenties.
