MD200-4 | Narrative Short Film
This is my first independent animated short film where I explored all production phases of creating a narrative piece from writing, to directing, acting and post production. The story follows Inge, from the song Inge 2 (by die Piesangskille), who loses her lover due to a tragic accident and remebers the memories they once shared.
Storyline

The narrative unfolds in the Western Cape, where they share laughter, indulge in wine, and embark on explorations in Stellenbosch. Her love interest, faces a tragic accident resulting in his demise at the hospital. We witness Inge mourning her loss, reminiscing in her room and revisiting the places they once enjoyed together.

Process

I crafted the storyline to align with the lyrics of the song "Inge 2" and captured the majority of scenes in Stellenbosch. As a personal challenge, I used EbSynth, a new software, for frame painting. This process proved more labor-intensive than initially expected, with approximately 8 hours of digital painting required per frame. Although EbSynth generates the rest of the sequence based on the painted frames, the software is still in its early stages, and only effective for a limited number of frames. Consequently, the final result exhibits a somewhat choppy quality. The post-production phase underwent multiple stylistic and iterative changes before reaching the conclusive piece.

Takeaways

It's great to explore new software and learn a variety of tools available. I have not tried proper cell animation and hope to explore it further to achieve a smoother finish.
