Half & Half: A Search

Half & Half: A Search discusses the notion of self-identity through my experiences growing up as a twin.
These unique experiences have led me to question my perception of individuality, independence, and self-value. I explore these concepts through the use of language and how it has played a pivotal role in the molding of my psychological being.

The work is a giant word search installed directly onto the wall. The piece consists of various fonts to create an overwhelming block of text, while adding texture and dimension to the work. While playing with the idea of searching for one’s self, viewers will inevitably attempt to look for recognizable words to no avail, as the wall will not contain a single word in the English language, echoing my endless search to understand my self-perception. The text also references a hidden language that only my sister and I understand and communicate with each other. The ladder’s purpose is to further emphasize the feeling that one is reaching a conclusion only to be led nowhere but back to the start.

Materials: cut vinyl letters adhered to wall, wooden ladder
