Modular concrete landscape furniture
shortlisted proposal for VPI CFD design competition
Can an concrete outdoor furniture be simultaneously modular, system based, yet sculpture-like and organic in its design? Can a concrete object show warmth and playfulness?
I aimed to meet these challenges when I designed the street furniture system for VPI, which aligns with the concept of an urban oasis. This design was inspired partly by forms found in nature (tree branches, skeletons) and partly by the architecture of Antoni Gaudi. Additionally, I took into consideration manufacturability, as the system can be used to create various street furniture pieces, space dividers, and landscape architectural elements, all assembled from a single type of component and its mirrored variant.

The coziness urban spaces can be enhanced, and they can be made more exciting, by using colored materials:
A terrazzo-like surface can be created by mixing recycled construction debris into concrete, followed by pouring and polishing:
