Final Major Project - Once Upon A Time...

A book representing the justaposition between the Brother Grimm stories and their modern day versions.
This was my final major project for the third year of the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course at Southampton Solent University. The idea for this was to look at the original tales written by the Grimm Brothers that have become well known fairy tales today- Cinderella, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty. These stories have then been represented visually in a way that reflects their place in modern society while still communicating the style and tone of the original folk lore tales.
The concertina style book also included tip in pages using a Japanese kozuke paper, adding layers of detail to some of the illustrations. Using a different colour scheme for each story, the detail of the illustrations were printed on the finer paper and overlaid on the shading detail. This allowed the illustration to work as a whole but allowed the reader to peel back the front page to see each section as a separate image.
A range of supporting pieces were created to go with the book at the end of year degree show, including photo frames exhibiting some of the illustrations, a three dimensional perspex box which showed two layers of detail for some of the illustrations and a video that was projected onto a banner.
