Ipsum Alii is a skincare brand inspired by the world of Kampo, Japanese herbal medicine, and Japanese wellness. They contacted me about designing the packaging for their first product line. They wanted to introduce the culture and knowledge to Europe through their products and were looking for an intercultural design to speak to a European audience.
The first idea came from Japanese pharmaceutical packaging. Medicines sold in pharmacies in Japan, including Kampo, are always offered in typography-intensive packaging. The result is reminiscent of Japanese writing system by creating typography with wide letter spacing and a vertical layout.
I tried to poetically express not only the scientific aspect of the brand but also its spiritual and artistic side by combining the systematic typography with a gradient pattern inspired by the traditional Japanese dyeing technique, Shibori.
