What makes the seemingly random patterns in nature so beneficial to our health? Is technology creating a disparate community, shortened perspectives, and a solitary subject whose reality is a mediated virtual one?

As we move through our cities “hyperbolic advertising techniques serve to supplant our consciousness and diffuse our reflective capacity” (Holl, 2012). This project, New Engagements, asks can the design of our urban environments be more conducive to ‘soft fascination’ – the fascinations we experience in nature that have restorative properties (Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989).

‘Headspace’ is the outcome of this enquiry and deals with the issues mentioned above. It comprises of designed objects and installations which mimic the seemingly random patterns found in nature. It attempts to facilitate these ‘soft fascination’ in the built-up urban environment. Engaging users in their environment and giving them a space for reflection in idle moments, away from the endless stream of new information we are constantly consuming.

CONTEXT

In the train station

SURPRISE
STOOL

Cylindrical stools appear heavy and stagnent. Once engaged with they reveal their convex base, allowing users to roll about on the spot, bringing them into the present moment.

MUSIC
MAKER

Pressure sensors are hidden in weather proof felt pockets which attach to the seat arms in train stations. Programed with arduino, each felt attachment acts a button, together playing 8 notes in the pentatonic scale. Sparking unexpected engagements between commuters.

LIVING
LIGHT

LED strips which appear to breath are concealed within 3D textile sleeves. They manifest themselves upon verticls within the built environment, intriguing passersby while attempting to change viewpoints and perspectives.

URBAN

Large concrete planters allow nature to thrive in harsh urban environments.
