An abandoned Avro Shackleton at Long Marston air strip. A development from the Avro Lincoln bomber, and predecessor of the legendary wartime Lancaster bomber, this plane was named after the polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.
Used by the Royal air force and South African air force, these planes were built as long-range maritime patrol aircraft and anti submarine warfare, as well as search and rescue, troop transport, and later on airbourne early warning duties. Introduced in 1951 and retired in 1990, only 185 of these amazing monsters of the sky were made- with this one, sadly left to spend the rest of its days rusting in silence.
