B O T  M A R K S

Done as a part of my Degree Project in B.Des.
The brief given was to create playful, laser cut and etched sheet metal character bookmarks
I started with some basic sketches to see how these characters would look. I explored ways in which they would reflect the material they will be made from. I thought of how three dimensional personas would translate into two dimensional objects.I began making illustrator drawings and the characters started defining themselves and developing personalities unique to each one of them.

The next step was to insure that their uniqueness was reflected in the final bookmarks as more than just a laser cut piece of metal.
Could they do more? How?
After knowing I wanted them to move, to grasp the paper in different ways, I began defining the type of movement each character would have and how that would reflect it's personality and abilities.

This is the moving joinery used in all the bookmarks.
I sought to define the number and the type of characters I would develop.
Finally I had three Bots - The Tank, The Wizard and The Geezer

The Tank

Is military bot. He's the last line of defense. He's big, ferocious and aggressive.
You'll notice that all the bots have a circle with three concentric lines within. This is where their 'heart' (or a CPB / CPU in this case) is.
(If something goes wrong, that's the first place you want to check.)
The Wizard

Is an intelligent bot. His primary function is to decode and relay information. He's light and spry.
The Geezer

Is basically an old geezer. He was probably good for something once upon a time, now he just hangs around scratching his chin.
Initially this bot was meant to be a smaller military bot but I figured two fighting bots are too much.
These characters can be placed between the pages of your book or clipped on in a number of ways. Here's how :
Here are the first prototypes made for this project. These have been made using 0.2mm brass sheet.
