OPERA POSTER THE WHO'S TOMMY

OPERA POSTER
THE WHO'S TOMMY OPERA POSTER
I started this opera poster project by starting out with reading the synopsis and watching the movie/opera of The Who's Tommy. This is a story about a boy, Tommy, who watches his dad, who he thought died fighting in the war, die by the hands of his stepfather. After this event he is stuck for decades mute and emotionless. When watching the movie there were a few distinct symbols that stood out and was important to the story - the first being a cross with a rose in the middle, used to symbolize his father's death and the second was the idea of church. After witnessing his father's death, the church became one of the places his mother would take him to try and fix his condition. Although it was a bad experience at that time, Tommy ends up going back to the church and being loved by the masses after he has recovered from his trauma. For that reason, I decided to depict Tommy as a symbol of the cross and rose, showing that for years he was stuck because of his father's death. I made the figure of Tommy using the pen tool in photoshop and collaged him on top of a stained-glass window with the rose. For the type, I wanted to continue the church theme with using a black letter font but wanting the white silhouette to stand out first and foremost, I chose to go with a gold color for the title.
