Qui Separabit - Who Shall Separate Us?

"Qui Separabit - Who Shall Separate Us?"
-Motto on the Seal of Northern Ireland

The Troubles' were a series of political, military and social conflicts that rocked Northern Ireland from the 1960s until the 2000's when a treaty was signed between the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and other factions loyal to the British Crown such as the Ulster Volunteer Forces (UVF), the Ulster Defense Forces (UDF), and police forces like the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC).  I've always been fascinated by Northern Ireland and Belfast specifically and traveled there in 2012 to photograph the murals throughout the city.  These murals, found in various Irish and 'loyalist' neighborhoods in Belfast, are slowly being removed as Belfast seeks to forget its identity as the locust of the 'The Troubles',  The following diptychs seek to capture the intertwined and complex legacy that the violence that left on the neighborhoods in Belfast.  Each pair includes images from a 'loyalist' neighborhood and an Irish neighborhood and were selected to highlight the visual interplay between the two murals.
