Warren Lammert's profile

Historians Investigate Truth of Genetic Discovery

Based in Boston, Massachusetts, Warren Lammert is a financial leader with more than 35 years of experience in public and private investment. He founded Granite Point Capital in 2004 and serves as a co-CIO. In addition, Warren B. Lammert also has a keen interest in scientific advancements, particularly in the field of genetics.

The discovery of the structure of the genetic material, DNA, in cells is a milestone in science, and scientists Francis Crick and James Watson are popularly credited with this discovery in 1953. These two scientists are not the only ones who contributed to the discovery. Some historians believe one of the scientists stole or memorized a copy of the first X-ray photograph containing much information about the shape of DNA from a female scientist called Rosalind Franklin, who worked at King's College in London in the 1950s. A publication from April 2023 on Nature.com rebuts the narrative.

Rosalind Franklin is undoubtedly the scientist who took the first X-ray photograph of the cross-shaped DNA, data that helped discover DNA's overall double helix structure. In the opinion article on Nature.com, historians found some documents in Rosalind Franklin's archive suggesting she consented to the use of her lab report by a third-party research team at Cambridge University, where Watson and Crick were working. They also found a draft of an unpublished Time magazine story that entails the contribution of the two research groups to the project. This suggests that DNA structure discovery is the result of a collaborative effort.
