'Making of Bao': character design

This is a showcase of a character design process of Bao who is a ninja cat. This was done as part of a first year module for university.
With these thumbnails I created a combination of both poses, silhouettes (clearly indicating the key shapes of the character design), and sketches of the character using certain shapes such as triangles, circles and ovals. I also drew some character poses in the form of silhouettes, and sketches using key shapes. I looked at Pinterest images of people doing Bojutsu moves and poses to use as loose references for my poses.
For the poses I wanted to capture his personality in them so I decided to draw him sleeping, eating and fighting which directly link to his traits of laziness, lack of self control around his mum's dumplings, and the love for his people and the duty to protect them.
I drew a life size template of the character in a T-shape pose so that I could shape the wire and foam according to the sizes and proportions of the character I had drawn out on paper.
I twisted wire for the arms, legs and tail. I then used two separate shorter pieces of untwisted wire for the ribbons that would come off the head. Once I had twisted the separate wire parts I chose a piece of blue foam, marked out with a sharpie where I wanted to cut it, and then used a hot wire foam cutter. after shaping the foam I put the wire for the limbs and ribbons into marked point on the foam torso.
Once I had finished the foam and wire base I added small pieces of plasticine onto the maquette piece by piece in layers, using clay tools to smoothen it out.
