Wydawnictwo Otwarte asked me to create a book cover illustration for their new book - Polish edition of Mariana Leky's "Kummer alle Art". The book is a collection of short stories about various people living in the same building. It's a heartwarming series of studies of mundane worries and adventures.
We decided that we want to include the building and some everyday objects which appear in the stories. I proposed the idea of a greenery exploding from inside the building, carrying the items on its branches.
The publisher liked this idea so we started developing it.
I created some sketches, with the facade front-facing and with a building in perspective. The publisher wanted to proceed with the latter so I created a final line drawing of the building and greenery and the next step was colouring. At this point I wanted the entire illustration to wrap around the book but the idea was later abandoned for better visibility on the spine of the book.
When the colouring was finished we started playing with the position of the text, as the initial one was not working too well.
In the end, this is the arrangment we decided to go with.
