Julie's Story: A Narrative of Resilience and Urban Poverty
created by: Celia Pell
Statement: I was tasked with creating 3 different posters that utilize different design methods and strategies in order to portray the photo narrative created by Darcy Padilla titled, The Julie Project. This story follows a young mother who struggles with urban poverty, addiction, abuse, and HIV.

I wanted to be able to accurately portray her story while making these posters visually interesting, capturing the essence of this amazing photo narrative.
Above is my very initial sketches for this project. I just wanted to get some ideas down before starting to work on any of the corresponding software.
I decided on the Title: Ebb and Flow, because Julie's life was full of unpredictable ups and downs, goods and bads, and was about as consistent as the waves in the ocean.
Photographic Poster - This is the final version of the photograph poster that I created. I used two images overlapping to show two different aspects of Julie's life that were intertwined with each other, yet so different.
Above is my another version of the photographic poster.
Illustration Poster - Above is the final version of my illustration poster. When creating this, I wanted to incorporate the red color that represents the AIDS crisis as well as other drawn elements that represent different aspects that affected Julie's life.
This is my first attempt at the illustration version.
Typographic Poster - This is the final version of the typographic poster that I created. For this poster I wanted to focus on the title placing emphasis on what and who the photo narrative is about. I also wanted to point out the fact that Julie's life was not a perfect constant straight line, it was often out of order and turned sideways.
This is my first attempt at the tyopgraphic poster.
