Madama Butterfly - Opera Poster Illustration

When @lukeazzopardi.studio asked me to work on the poster for this year's opera production at @teatruaurora , we both knew what the answer was going to be.

Luke's vision inspired a couple of ideas that I quickly sketched out on my trusty iPad (swipe right). Our initial concept was to use Asian fans to create a red butterfly against a white backdrop, giving it the appearance of the Japanese flag. However, after further discussions and seeing Luke's costume designs, we decided to pivot to green, aiming to emphasise the delicate balance between the scenery and the main character. The butterfly fans transformed into a single fan that seamlessly integrated Cio-Cio San and a landscape that still featured a Japanese rising sun of sorts.

Once the sketch was finalised, the piece was illustrated on Procreate for iPad and completed in Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator.

When it came to layout and typography, I drew inspiration from 19th-century Japanese print references.

Madama Butterfly, 14th of October. Tickets can be purchased from the theatre's website.
