Knotplex: wood made from plantwaste

Knotplex
Problem
Japanese Knotweed is an invasive plant that scatters across Europe. The plant damages numerous infrastructures and displaces every other plant in its environment. Because it is tough to remove without reproducing itself, it creates a big waste stream.
Opportunity
Knotplex is an exploration of Timelab to process Japanese Knotweed into source material. The wood-like material can be pressed into a plate by grinding the dried plant and mixing it with casein (milk protein) or hide glue. Traditional wood and laser operations can be applied to this fully biodegradable material.
Product
Together with Jarne Fiers and Stef Mathys, I made and tested samples of the material. Knotplex is a sustainable alternative for prototyping, and we tested and designed a system to make it more accessable for the students of Howest Campus Kortrijk.
