New Balance MIUSA 990v6

Apparel
The beginning of this project started with a focus on returning to form. The flagship MIUSA footwear model is updated using modern performance geometries, midsole compounds, outsole compounds, assembly methods, etc. This model is created to expand the scope of MIUSA manufacturing with a design that optimizes assembly time in New Balance's owned production facilities (990v6 saves SAMS (standard assembly minutes) vs predecessors in the 99X family), as well as shaving grams in weight compared to its direct predecessor in the 990v5. The 990v6 as a result is the fastest 990 yet.
To reduce the overall part count for the upper (saving SAMS) and reduce weight, the team strategically utilized the iconic NB N saddle logo as a single midfoot chassis kit. This midfoot kit encompasses the lateral and medial N logo marks, as well as framing the entire eyerow to provide a grounded locked-in fit when laced, having formed its connections right down the sides of the shoe. This allowed for the removal of heavier midfoot materials that would otherwise be designed to address the same functionality. An additional benefit of this kitted N component was that it allowed the more premium (expensive) pig suede overlay patterns to have greater nesting on the hide than predecessor models, thereby reducing material costs considerably.
The 990 model series has its roots in grey color tones. This project explored how the color grey can be refreshed to feel more contemporary and bold, while still retaining its legacy within the brand.
