The headstone Evighet is inspired by Snow White who, after her death, carefully was placed in a glass coffin, where she remained beautiful and admired. The idea was to create a headstone that was beautiful yet functional, a headstone that just as Snow White's coffin tenderly encapsulates and preserves the last physical traces that you leave behind as a person.
Eternity consists of three units. A foundation that resembles the foundation used for today's traditional headstones a quadrangular dome of thermally hardened glass with a frame made from brass. The frame is fixed to the ground to enclose the core. There is not much that limits what can be encapsulated in the glass dome witch opens up for individuality and personality. For our core, we chose a material that harmonizes well with the traditional headstones available in today's cemeteries. The mineral halite, casual-called rock salt, a beautiful stone that is usually white or colorless, but which also can be found in most other colors. The advantage of halite in addition to its aesthetics, is that it can be reused when the time as part of a headstone is expired.In Sweden halite is used primarily as road salt or salt lick to bigger animals. This gives the stone the possibility of a longer life cycle. Without protection, the stone will be leached within twenty-five years, but the glass dome preserves the stone in its present condition until it is to be used within another application.The idea is that an old stone of halite can be replaced with a new stone of the same material or something completely different when the grave site eventually changes, but the glass dome and the foundation will be left intact.
The design of the headstone, with its simple straight lines is a reflection of our time and a simplification of older headstones. The shape also reconnects to the material halite, witch in its natural crystalline system is cubic. Evighet is beautiful in its simplicity.
