Butan are an African streetwear label with strong African narratives that talk to the past, present and future of culture, fashion and the spirit of the youth on the continent. For them, every garment is treated as a piece of art. With this in mind, we really enjoyed creating and crafting various pattern designs for their collections. Let us show you:
"CAMOUFLAGED"
A staple of streetwear and counter-culture, camo is always fashionably conspicuous despite its aim to be inconspicuous. For Butan, we have crafted camo prints that embed their brand animal, the panther, as well as representations of the Transkei Wildcoast landscape with it's star filled night skies.
"TRADITIONAL"
For Butan, we look at many different African design forms, but none instantly resonate like traditional patterns found throughout the continent. Using this inspiration, we have crafted everything from Bogolanfini, (mudcloth from Mali) with sci-fi motifs, through to “Shwe-gami”, a  fusion of Japanese Katagami with South African Shewhwese prints.
"GLITCHED"
We had some fun here. For this range we re-interpretted and mixed 3 popular African pattern styles: Animal print, Wax print and the vibrant masquerade patterns from Nigeria. For maximum Afrofuturism, we “glitched” or acid washed each pattern to add a warped and technological distortion.
