Photoshop & Body Image Views

The aim of this project was to investigate the influence Photoshop’s use within print based advertising has on consumer views on body image. A creative solution was to be made to not necessarily tackle the issue, but to stimulate thought-provoking discussions surrounding the topic.

Valiant efforts have been made by various companies and individuals to tackle the issue of Photoshop regarding body image views, but most have failed. The fact that the problem still exists has been the driving force behind the project. I want to provoke discussion, and even create a starting point to influence some sort of change.

The final artifacts for this project are four A2 sized posters with an accompanying book containing my dissertation on the investigation into Photoshop and body image views.
Much like the manipulation that has been carried out in advertisements, caricatures exaggerate specific features and distort the reality of the body through advanced photo doctoring techniques.
What’s Inside?
The issues discussed throughout the book involve the representation of femininity, hypermasculinity, controversies within the media, and how the problem is being tackled.By weighing up both sides of the Photoshop debate, the book explores the intricate avenues which surround body image issues in relation to print media.
