Final Major Project - Viral

Aims and Concept

I decided that my aim of this project would be to communicate to all users that the data on the internet which they post can be shared beyond a point of their control, and therefore can leave a mark on the web that can become a social phenomenon, and that even if they delete the original version, someone will always have a copy.

The best examples of content where the control has been lost are viral memes, videos and articles. These can be uploaded by someone themselves, or customised by anyone online (this is shown most through memes).

With ‘becoming viral’ being a very new, and modern, topic, I feel that showing an investigation into what happens to the content, once it has become viral, is an effective method to enlighten people about how little control they have over their data.

Outcome

To complete my aim I decided that my final product would be a book, an ironic outcome that could actually be controlled and held, very opposite to what the book was about. It has an authentic feel and
it a cross over of subtle digital elements and print design.

Elements such as screens and moving text directions have been played around with to show the small digital elements as well as reflecting that viral content is never the same, and forever changing.

The Design of the book itself has a partial hide and reveal theme throughout, with two reading directions for the reader to engage with.

The entire book has small type details that are essential to show the concept, such as the titles start fully structured and begin to unravel the more you read on.

The book is an exploitative read, where the aim is for the reader to have discovered their own experience. Things such as images purposely not being included means the reader engages with
the content in a way that tries to push reflection and discovery.

Each spread is constructed differently and has been made to reflect digital elements as well as printed ones. For example, having a cross over of a dictionary and google define theme at the beginning and
end of the book.
