ABB (ASEA Brown Boveri) is a Swiss multinational corporation headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, operating mainly in robotics and the power and automation technology areas. It ranked 158th in the Forbes Ranking (2013).

The Electrification Products division manufactures low- and medium-voltage low-voltage circuit breakers, switches, control products, wiring accessories, enclosures and cable systems to protect people, installations and electronic equipment from electrical overload. The division further makes KNX systems that integrate and automate a building's electrical installations, ventilation systems, and security and data communication networks. Electrification Products also incorporates an Electrification Solutions unit manufacturing low voltage switchgear and motor control centres. Customers include a wide range of industry and utility operations, plus commercial and residential buildings.

CLIENT'S REQUESTS FOR THE APP

The mobile app must help the user to recognize

4 different types of relay

- electromechanical (made between 1900 - 1963)

- static (made between 1963 - 1972)

- digital (made between 1972 - 1980)

- numeric (made between 1980 -present)

The app needs 3 necessary data to make RETROFIT

1. The date of construction of the electrical panel

2. The date of construction of the relay

3. Critical environment (temperature, humidity, pollution, salt / chemical environment)

- Interval since the last maintenance / test

- Interval since the last replacement / repair - the last date for fault

- Active reporting yes / no

- Interval since the last maintenance / test

STAKEHOLDERS INFORMATION & NEEDS

The app's stakeholders are all ABB technicians who deal directly with the relay rating. When they are on the site of the evaluation they faced the following situation:

- need to open the electrical panel, where the relay is inserted

- looking for useful data for retrofit

So after being asked and showed the first draft of the app they tell these needs:

- need to create an app that can detect itself the necessary data

- need to have simple app, with few data to insert manually, since the technicians to do this must remove the protective gloves

Indeed after a first workshop made up of the electrical technicians who deal with the maintenance of the relays, it was found that:

• when they evaluate the relay they are in rooms where there is rarely an internet connection. So it is necessary to make a storage of the data and send them when the connection will be re-established

• with the current gloves the technicians would not be able to use the app, it is therefore necessary to provide them with an accessory that allows them to click the touchscreen

• The area around to the relay need a better description compared to the current option: we try to solve it given the possibility of attaching a vocal note that better explains and describes the environment surrounding the relay.
