Polarization by Corridor - Super Speciality Hospital

Project type: Speciality Hospital
Location: Uluberia, WestBengal, India
Status: Academic proposal
Year: 2021
Area: 9,000 sq.m.
Site: 2.3 acres

Bounded by river Bhagirathi in the East, separating it from Kolkata and Damodar in the West and South, Uluberia, at present, is a busy place bustling with multifarious activites easily accessible by bus or train. Though, all these factors lead to a rapid urbanization growth, yet the healthcare scenario of Uluberia is not very encouraging.
The design aims to bridge the economic gap between a decent healthcare facility and the local people, by proposing a hundred bedded super speciality hospital, on a limited land parcel area of 2.29 acres.
The design development phase is based on a concept of “user experience while in distress”. A central corridor acts as a “spine” of the building, connecting various out-patient zones to critical departments linearly. The building is intercepted by green courtyards to maximise the natural light through corridors and enhance the visual experience at ground level.
A separate block for cafeteria, kitchen and laundry is connected to the main corridor at its northern end. The critical departments such as operation theatres, sterile supply department, laboratories and administrations have been located in the first level, where as the upper floors are dedicated for in-patient departments.
