Flux Modular Library

The JCSP Library brief asked for the design of an innovative pop up library system, that could easily be moved and adapted to DEIS schools in disadvantaged areas without fixed library facilities of their own. The brief asked for a non-traditional learning environment that emphasised the differences between the library space and usual class room environments in an effort to engage students and improve literacy skills. My response to the brief focused on a modular system called Flux that could be adapted to a variety of different environments.

Flux Hub

At the heart of the Flux system is a portable Hub which contains a variety of reading material (fiction, academic etc.) as well as electronic support such as e-readers and an Ipad, all within one easy to use but entirely secure and lockable structure. The Hub is the key piece in the Flux system, functioning with or without the other units, and is designed to turn any school environment into a fully functioning library.

Flux Furniture

Surrounding the core Hub concept is a modular furniture system with pieces that can be added as needed to further enhance the Flux environment, not only to create a space unique to each school but also a space that can constantly be changed and rearranged based on the user’s current needs.

The simple forms of the seating allows a wide range of possible uses: as walls for privacy, tiered seating, work spaces, recliners or anything in between. Peripherals like wooden working surfaces can be added as needed to allow table based activities. The addition of an extendable screen unit allows for the displaying of films and documentaries or more recreational video game playing. All these pieces enhance the overall Flux experience but again are completely optional depending on expense or available space.
Brand Extensions

As part of the Flux identity I also created a stationery set and accompanying website mock up as extensions of the brand. My design for the website includes a tracker which lets users follow the library and see the many ways in which different schools might use it. Over time I also envisioned the website functioning as an open archive of student reviews of books, films and other media available as a resource for aspiring readers and to encourage writing and presentation as a skill. This system would also hopefully encourage a sense of connectivity between Flux users as well as providing an encouragement to continue reading even after Flux has moved on to another school.
