Designing a Landmark

Fgura Identity 2011
Challenges in designing and implementing a Landmark monument for Fgura, Malta.
This project was an exceptional one for Keith Galea Design, since usually artistic installations and landscaping / exterior design projects were two distinct services offered in private commissions. This was a public site, and had exposure to all the visitors of the locality, or rather the Island. The design presented was sensitively chosen to unite all stakeholders in this community, be visually strong, while still portray the local identity. The economy of materials, the selection of processes, the logistics of construction and installation, are proof of a product design approach. In fact the idea is so powerfully simple that installation was as seamless and functional as planned. Functionality came in the design also in terms of alignment. Since this monument would be placed in a roundabout- crossroad junction, the 4 ideal viewing perspectives were set to favour drivers, waiting at the roundabout stops, making wait time an opportunity to enjoy this installation in full.
