UMUNTHU: An East African Cultural Centre

This is an introduction into my final thesis project in which I introduce a community centre that will highlight the importance of having a hub for East Africans to gather and experience a sense of belonging, comfort, familiarity and most importantly, the feeling of home — as well as a place for individuals to appreciate African history and culture.

Cultural identity is an important contributor to an individuals well-being. Finding identity within a particular culture gives people the feeling of security and belonging. It also allows others to find support from people with shared values and aspirations.
Umunthu is a Malawian philosophy that comes from the Bantu word, Ubuntu, which means 'humanity to others'. It is often described as reminding us that 'I am what I am because of who we all are'.
The community plays a very significant role in everyday life in African contexts. It has been shown time and time again to be one of the most essential elements of African society.
