Discover a Taste of South Africa

Approaching and attracting an audience through culture, foods, and everything Afrikaans to make the Afrikaans language even more part of everyday life in South Africa. The message being conveyed in this project is reminding South Africans
of how spectacular South Africa is, the Afrikaans language
and the food and culture that come with it.

This project required the creation of an illustrated display typeface and applying the designs to an A2 specimen poster. The poster would then be inserted into the magazine of choice – the ATKV’s Taalgenoot – along with a double page spread editorial illustration.

The project pays homage to South Africa by focussing on one of South Africa’s most popular home cooked meals – bobotie. This edition of the Taalgenoot magazine and the type specimen poster would be released during South Africa’s heritage month in order to pay homage to the country’s heritage and food. Aimed at the readers of the Taalgenoot magazine, the project has a broad target audience with a wide variety of age groups, but with one thing in common – the love they share for the Afrikaans language.
This is what the ATKV and the Taalgenoot stands for.

The illustrations consist of the ingredients used to create the dish.
In the editorial spread the illustration displays a creative visual of the dish being made. The type specimen is constructed out of the ingredients that make up the unique dish called bobotie. Along with serving as a creative poster that can be hung on any wall, the poster introduces the ingredients of this home cooked meal. The article in the Taalgenoot magazine introduces you to this meal that takes you back to memories of
“jou ma se kos” – your mum’s food.

The use of colour sets the tone of a happy, feel-good memory, with the use of rich warm colours. Brush textures give an experience of what the ingredients
would look and feel like in actuality.
