Mythical Beast Illustration - "The Merlion" (Pen and Ink/Gouache)

 

The brief for this illustration was to choose a mythical beast and place it in an "out-of-context" environment. I chose to use the Merlion, a Singaporean mythical beast, and place it in the waters of the Marina Bay, a more luxurious part of Singapore. The addition of making the Merlion sleep, or rest in the waters emphasises how "out-of-context" this beast really is. I decided to use a very limited color palette for this piece to emphasise the moonlit environment.

Fairy Tale Cover Illustration - "The Boy and the Wolves" (Gouache)

 

For this illustration, the brief was to choose a fairy tale and re-design the cover for the book in a way that would be best fitting. I chose the Native American fairy tale: The Boy and the Wolves, or The Broken Promise. The entire piece was done in gouache after first sketching out the composition in 4H and HB Pencil.
