Water~colour Portraits

Female identity and its illustration by females was something that was on my mind since a very young age especially as I was realising the gigantic lack in representation while I was growing up. I was interested in the female gaze, the autobiographical point of view and inspired by my friends, teachers and literature heroines but also by my own aspects of self I began to draw what (I) was missing, female portraits by a female author.
When these portraits were named in their final stage the picture was at last clear in my mind. The names came from women duos or trios from friends of mine such as Evita and Melina, artist sisters I admire like Jemima and Domino, to native American shaman teachers from books like Agnes and Ruby but also film heroines like Thelma and Louise.
The style is modernistic and pop art inspired at times subconsciously from Picasso’s intense outlines and disproportionate forms to Warhol’s graphic design quality. Nevertheless their artistic speech and purpose is much more connected to Frida Kahlo’s (and other women creators), great desire to self express.
