CONTEMPORARY ART WITHIN CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE

The designed Contemporary Art Center intends to exhibitnot only art works of the national artists but international as well on purposeto develop and increase the understanding of what is contemporary art and howit works.
Theconcept of the Contemporary Art Center design is grounded on the definition of contemporary art,its characteristics and distinctions from any other type of art.

The unique property of the contemporary art is thatthe spectator can see in every piece of art that sense what he or she puts init. It makes us to think about the problem, which the artist wanted to turnone’s mind to. This art works without rules and commitments, with incrediblevariety of shapes and materials, ideas and performances. All this statements hasbecome an inspiration for creating an image of our Contemporary Art Center. A multiformplastic form which is trying to break the glass cage of stereotypes, to setfree the new vision and new ideas– this is how it's seen.

      URBAN CONSIDERATIONS

Voroncovsky estate is one of the centralestates facing the river from the left bank of the city, its developmentincludes a low valuable development and its general plan is currently underdesign. There were several propositions how to arrange the development of thisarea and all of them presume the designing of the second city center here. Thearea of the estate is located between the CentralBridge and the planned bridge acrossthe Green Island. A brand new business center isexpected to be built here together with high valuable development and newcultural center. In our proposition the center is placed 350 meters left from theCentral Bridge. The new cultural center is beingdeveloped into a complete visitor and residential destination.
The Center area will be linked tothe new business center of the left bank and the existing historical center ofthe right bank via several, 6-lane freeways making the destination easilyaccessible to the main city center , which will be just across the river. Ourdevelopment plan provides the formation of multipurpose cultural center in thearchitectural ensemble of the second city center.
The site for the Voroncovsky estatecenter occupies the territory of 9 hectares. The deep linear composition of thecenter has become an impact in creation of central pedestrian axis. This axisgoes diagonally through the whole area of the center subordinating thesurrounding development and sets the direction for pedestrian movement. On theother hand the axis divides the sites of the Contemporary Art Center and The PerformingArt Center into unequal parts, and gives the opportunity for formation ofinteresting compositions for each complex.
    CONTEMPORARY ARTS+PERFORMING ARTS

The idea of positioning the CAC buildingin front of the Performing Art center reflects the inherent connection betweenthese two institutions. They are facing and interacting each other at the sametime. The main point in this kind of interaction is the compositional unity andoriginality of each object built on the outer contrast.  The difference between two objects consistsin typological particular properties and stylistic characteristics as well.
The interior design of the Art Center isrepresented in so-called “neutral style” with smooth white surfaces and large open spaces, arranged for betterconcentration of the viewer’s attention on exhibits. Thegeneral character of the rooms with curved walls allows for a silent yetdramatic backdrop for the exhibition of contemporary art. These rooms are meantto be silent, but not static; they are differentiated through theirirregularity. The intensive variation in roomshape and size due to the gently curving walls of the building and theplenty of huge windows with light-diffusing glass allownatural light to enter in several different ways. This asymmetrically drivesmovement through a series of spatial sequences. In this regard the overalldesign becomes a slightly warped "gallery of rooms," where thespatial flow emerges from the combination of the horizontal light-catchingsection and the continuity of the internal space. This curved unfoldingsequence provides elements of both mystery and surprise - which do not exist ina typical single or double loaded orthogonal arrangement of space. Instead, thevisitor is confronted with a continuous unfolding of an infinite series ofchanging perspectives which connect the internal experience to the overallconcept. In addition it creates the aesthetic spatial experience andprovokes the visitor to discover the whole inside world of the Art Museum stepby step.

The exterioris inseparably connected withinterior, even in coloristic way – both of the experiences glitter under thesunlight due to spectacular façade and interior trim arrangement. Moreover somepart of exterior volume intrudes into the interior room and creates the effectof “inside out” space. All of these techniques are meant to invert people’sperception and adjust it to the art atmosphere inside of the building.
