Reading in Older Learners

Improving standards of reading and oracy is a key priority of the Welsh Government. It will help students to access the full curriculum and reach their potential, and also supports a key purpose of the Curriculum for Wales: supporting children and young people to be ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives.

We worked with the Welsh Government to produce an animation that shares a series of tips for parents and carers to help their children develop a love of reading and highlights the benefits this helps realise throughout their whole lives. Working with the Books Council of Wales we developed a series of everyday actions that can be encouraged to equip learners with lifelong skills. Using ordinary activities to do something extraordinary.

We wanted to engage students in the production of the animation, so we partnered with a primary school in Newport, Wales and challenged the students to help us create our storyboard frames. We asked them to draw their favourite activities they do with their parents, and used these scenes as inspiration for the animation.
