TANZAKADEMIE

The Tanzakademie is a dance school and performance center in the Warehouse District of New Orleans. Pina Bausch's choreography for Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring provided the initial inspiration for this proposal.  In it, the dancers create tension by grouping themselves into opposing areas of the stage, emphasizing the space between and the objects within.  The Tanzakademie is composed of three separate masses (the dance studios, the auditorium and administration, and the black box theater)  all contained within the frame of the building.  Between these masses is an atrium that serves as both vertical circulation and a connection between the two street facades.  The Tanzakademie is a thru-site, and opens to the public at ground level, bringing the street life in to a cafe on one side and a studio that fully opens for performance on the other.
