I wanted a piece that not only displays rainbow-fully (hur hur) but also represents me, as an artist.
The primary role of the scarf is so that owners can display them at home, so I chose to go with a beckoning cat that is familiar to many (Maneki-Neko) and believed to bring good luck! When I was a kid, my mom and aunts would say in hokkien “heng gah beh si” which loosely translates to ‘Dead lucky’ and that verse has been stuck in my head since. It’s a kind of Singaporean slang to describe someone who is not just lucky, but SUPER, DUPER, LUCKY.
It’s a very nostalgic verse to me and it does bring back memories. Why be lucky when you can be dead lucky? ;)
