The ideas I incorporated into my box came from other mythology I have seen, Nature, and professional perfume boxes.

            Other companies perfume boxes gave us good layout ideas—We got the idea of putting an ingredients list on the bottom of our box to make it seem more professional and real.  Also, the boxes gave us good movement and emphasis ideas.  There has to be a color scheme on the box, or else it would clash and be a bright mess and there had to be some movement so all parts of the box where given some attention.  The gradient idea we had on the top and bottom of the box moves the viewer’s attention to the drawing on the back of the box.  The disadvantage of using others’ perfume boxes as reference is going off their design too closely so it isn’t completely the group’s idea. There are some perfume boxes that were really creative that I really wanted to take an idea from.

            We got some of our off of mythology—Valhalla is from Norse mythology.  When we originally split up to sketch our ideas down, I wanted to make the box heaven, Scandinavian, and warrior themed and made the box based more off of ravens and flowers then perfume.  Mythology is a great resource though—it is unique, creative and a great way of setting theme to your company and product.  A disadvantage is people not knowing the reference to mythology and not getting the message and theme so much.

            The last resource we used was nature. Many objects in nature are symbols and when people think about them, they know the emotion they convey.  For perfume, flowers are a feminine symbol that conveys smelling good and beauty.  It is a basic symbol that brings a lot of meaning to the product it is depicted on and easily unites other symbols and themes you may have on the product.  The disadvantage of using nature and flowers is that it is way overused on perfume boxes, dulling our design idea.
