Mariachi Peralta Milano
More than a decade ago, Gerson and Nahum Jaimes decided to create a Mariachi group with other performers. They are now full-time musicians and have dedicated their lives to learning and developing skills in different instruments. Mariachi for them was the obvious answer, they grew up listening to the music as their parents and grandparents did, falling in love with it since they were children and carrying that love all the way across the Atlantic. The project grew bigger, in 2015 Gabriel Otoya (also full-time musician) joined the group along with Italian performers such as Tony Velarde, who identifies himself more as Cuban than italian.
Gerson and Nahum are both from Bolivia, they came to Milan when they were teenagers; Gabriel is from Peru and he first came to Italy to live with his aunt when he was 19.
They all live in Corsico, in the Milan periphery, where they converted Gabriel’s apartment living room into their rehearsal and recording studio. Inside this area 14,5% of non-EU immigrants live, and create a stablished community regarding a network of co-nationals, as well as the housing regarding income and job opportunities.
